Rudrasagar Lake - also known as Rudijala is a famous lake which is situated in the Melaghar Block under Sonamura Sub-Division in the West Tripura District in Tripura, India. It is among India's national lakes and has a water area of 5.3 sq km. The lake is known for the famous lake palace of Tripura, Neermahal, which is built in the centre of the lake.
Rudrasagar is about 55 kms away from Agartala, the capital of Tripura. The lake is identified as one of the wetlands of National Importance for conservation. It is a floodplain wetland of Gumti River. Rudrasagar Lake is a natural alluviation reservoir, which receives flow from three streams - Noacherra, Durlavnaraya cherra and Kemtali cherra.
Rudrasagar is popular for the the Royal Palace of Agartala, Neermahala, which is located in the midst of the lake. This was the summer palace of the Tripura kings. Constructed by the then Tripura king Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur in 1935, the palace is a highly ornate structure with carved balconies, towers, and bridges and domes, and has a fairy-tale reflection in the beautiful lake of Rudrasagar. This elegant Palace is the showcase of Agartala Culture.
Rudrasagar Lake attracts a lot of migratory birds every year. An annual boat festival is organized in July/August. This lake serves as an ideal spot for water sports and boating.
