Four National Bravery Award winning boys and girls from North East along with 21 children from the other parts of India drew applause from the audience at the 67th Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26, 2016, for having saved lives in grave situations.
Chongtham Kuber Meitei from Manipur on March 8, 2016, jumped into a pond to save a girl of his own age from drowning.
Angelica Tynsong from Meghalaya risked her life to save her brother Carmel Tynsong from an inferno that had engulfed their home at Pahamrioh village under Nongpoh PS in Ri Bhoi District on February 1, 2015.
Maurice Yengkhom, on March 8, 2015 was playing with 13 year old Hijam Rodin and five other cousins on the terrace of their building. While playing, Maurice realized that Rodin had been struck by an electric current, probably through a naked wire. Maurice tried to pull Rodin but was thrown back due to electric shock. Doing quick thinking and having presence of mind, Maurice used a broken cane chair and hit Rodin with it, thereby freeing him from electric current.
Ramdinthara (15) of Mizoram, who saved two persons from electrocution, was awarded with Bapu Gaidhani Award.
The National Bravery Award Scheme was initiated by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) to give due recognition to the children who distinguish themselves by performing outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service.
